Can science explain everything?

Many people think so. Science, and the technologies it has spawned, has delivered so much to the world: clean water; more food; better healthcare; longer life. And we live in a time of rapid scientific progress that holds enormous promise for many of the problems we face as humankind. So much so, in fact, that many see no need or use for religion and belief systems that offer us answers to the mysteries of our universe. Science has explained it, they assume. Science and religion just do not mix.

Oxford Maths Professor and Christian believer Prof. John Lennox offers a fresh way of thinking about science and Christianity that dispels the common misconceptions about both. He reveals that not only are they not opposed, but they can and must mix to give us a fuller understanding of the universe and the meaning of our existence.

Review from the GLO General Director, Stephen McQuoid:

There is a brilliant little book by John Lennox called, Can Science explain Everything? If you are very familiar with Lennox’s writings, or have heard some of his debates or lectures, there might not be much new material in this little book. That is because this book reads a bit like an introduction to the author's thinking on the interface between science and faith. That said, it is a gem of a book and the kind that I would want to give to every young Christian going to university. Lennox is a brilliant thinker who writes with great clarity and can explain complex issues in a very straightforward way.

Lennox starts the book with some personal reflections on the pressure Christians face from the scientific establishment. This is followed by a couple of chapters in which he tries to dismantle two myths, one of which is that religion depends on faith but science doesn’t; and the other that science depends on reason and Christianity doesn’t. Both chapters are excellent and set the tone for the rest of the book. He goes on from this point to defend the Bible and its message, including all the miracles of Jesus. He then lays down a challenge in chapter 8, stating that the best way to disprove Christianity would be to discount the resurrection of Jesus. Having laid down the challenge, he gives some of the standard and very compelling evidences for the resurrection of Jesus. The book comes to an end with an appeal to faith, and a declaration of the explanatory limitations of science. The book is short, readable, and well worth the investment.
