As Christians we should be the most grateful people alive. After all, doesn't the Bible encourage thankfulness and condemn grumbling?

Peter Maiden traces the theme of thanksgiving in Scripture, and shows how we can genuinely live counter-cultural lives even in an age of rampant entitlement. With a pastoral heart, he explains how gratitude is the key to joyful, consistent Christian living, discipleship and mission involvement. He focuses on:

· how we can develop the habit of thanksgiving
· the benefits of gratitude
· how we can be grateful, even in hard times

Each chapter unpacks biblical truth and grounds it with practical application and personal illustrations. A series of short Bible study questions and reflections (mostly on the Psalms) conclude the chapters.

As he was writing this book, poignantly and to his great shock, the author learned that he was suffering from incurable cancer. Far from derailing his message, this unwelcome news energised his efforts as he poured out his vision on the page with his now-limited resources. This is authenticity at its best. This book will be the author's last.

As reviewed by Dr. Stephen McQuoid in August 2020- 'Radical Gratitude is a wonderful little book that combines moving personal stories with helpful exposition of some important passages of scripture. Anyone who knew Peter would know of his deep commitment to Christ and the gospel as well as his service to the cause of mission. Both come clearly out in this book.

In the subtitle Peter states that the book is about ‘recalibrating our hearts in an age of entitlement’. It does just that. He starts by describing just how entitled our culture has become, a relatively recent downward spiral in cultural values. He grew up in a committed Christian home where clearly his parent’s attitudes had a profound impact on him. He then talks about the great blessings of being a Christian before looking at the issue of gratitude and how it can affect us in all kinds of circumstances. He argues that gratitude is a choice and beautifully weaves personal accounts and examples with scripture. At the end of each chapter there is a reflection page which gives a scripture reading and some questions to ponder on. This book is an easy read, yet profound and countercultural. I was so engaged I had it read within 24 hours of buying it. A brilliant little book which leaves us with precious and challenging thoughts from an amazing Christian leader. Get the book and be blessed!'
