As human beings, we are created with desires. We all long for meaningful relationships, lives that reflect goodness, engagements with beauty, and the freedom to pursue our lives with integrity.

But where can our restless hearts find fulfillment for these universal longings? Philosopher and apologist Greg Ganssle argues that our widely shared human aspirations are best understood and explained in light of the Christian story. With grace and insight, Ganssle explains how the good news of Jesus Christ makes sense of--and fulfills--our deepest desires. It is only in the particular claims of the Christian faith, he argues, that our universal human aspirations can find fulfillment and our restless hearts will be at peace.

'This is a book written for thinking people whether they are Christians or not. Ganssle makes the point that he has not written this book to show that the Christian story is true and rather surprisingly he argues that people are generally not interested in the question of its truth, though he does believe it to be true. Instead, he wants to show that the things that really matter to people are things that the Christian story can explain, but which other worldviews such as atheism cannot explain.

He begins by talking about issues such as happiness and also relationships. These are things that we crave, especially when we realise that a quality such as true happiness is a much deeper thing than merely enjoying some simple pleasures and that most things in life that we really think of as precious are bound up in our relationships. These, he argues, are not only consistent with the Christians story of a God who creates us to share meaningful life together, but they also make much more sense as part of a Christian worldview than they ever could in a Darwinian context. He also deals with the importance of who we want to be and what we appreciate. While we fail as human beings, we appreciate goodness and wish we were better. We also love beauty and value it for it’s own sake. Indeed, we love to be able to see, precisely because we live in a world where there is much that is worth seeing. These also reflect something of who God is and demonstrates not only that theism makes sense of the world but that our deepest desires can be attained through a commitment to the Christian faith.

This is a book written by a philosopher for people who like to think about life from different angles. It is a work of philosophy as opposed to apologetics or theology. For this reason, it could easily be given to a non-Christian and would lead to good conversations. It helpfully demonstrates how the Christian faith fits with our everyday life experience.'
