Cultural intelligence requires that we understand the changing world around us, and engage these changes in ways that edify the church and winsomely seek after the lost. In Cultural Intelligence, Darrell L. Bock builds a theology of cultural engagement, and equips readers to relate well to their culture with an eye on the example set by Paul in the New Testament. This timely book will highlight the need to center our beliefs and practices around God’s word while interacting well with a culture that is increasingly detached from biblical truth.

As reviewed by Dr. Stephen McQuoid in October 2020- 'This is a book for which I hope there will be a sequel. Bock starts off by doing a short exposition of 6 key engagement texts which he states will gives us a guide on how we interact with our broader culture. He then reminds us how much culture has changed even over a few short years as well as boldly stating that most training available for pastors and Christian leaders helps them to hold internal discussions within the church, but not discussions with our unchurched culture (though he unsurprisingly still defends seminaries as he states they offer the kind of strategic ‘groupthink’ that a local church cannot).

Chapter 3 entitled Difficult Conversations is the most practical and useful as Bock challenges us on two levels. Firstly, how convinced we are of our position on particular subjects. That is, would we be prepared to ‘die in a ditch’ for the issue or could we potentially be wrong? Then he notes three types of issues we will confront in our conversations with unchurched people. There are areas where there is a core difference with little chance of common ground (eg. Abortion and Same sex marriage). Then areas where we agree on the goal but not the methods (eg. racial integration) and thirdly areas where there is a biblical tension because we live in a fallen world (eg. immigration and gun control). Bock stated that salvation is not just about personal transformation but witness through life and engagement in society. It finishes with some tantalising hints about how he would deal with some of these issues. This book is an excellent foundation in cultural intelligence, I hope there will be a sequel.'
