On the evening of the 10th of January 1970, the President of Biafra flew into exile from his shrinking country's only airstrip. No more than a short stretch of road, it was his last avenue of escape from the advancing Federal Army and the collapsing republic he had led since 1967 as a breakaway state from the rest of Nigeria in West Africa.

Just half an hour before the Biafran airliner departed with its defeated leader, a smaller plane had flown out of the same airstrip. On board were the last medical missionaries airlifted out of Biafra by the World Council of Churches. Among them was a Scottish doctor called Ann Jackson.

This is Ann's story. She tells it here in her own words in the journal she kept in the war zone that was Biafra. She was there to the end, one of the last doctors out of Biafra.
