Sir John Laing turned a local Carlisle building company into a large international civil engineering group. A devout evangelical Christian, throughout his long life he regularly supported a wide array of Christian ministries in the U.K. and around the world. In recounting the story of Sir John and the charitable trusts he established, this book seeks to honour his vision and generosity, and celebrate God's faithfulness over the past century.

About the Author:
Alex McIlhinney studied history at the University of Glasgow and University College, London, then followed a career in public service and in business. He was a director of Stewards Company Limited for thirty-four years, and served for twenty years on the J.W. Laing Trust committee, for the last seven as Chairman.

As reviewed by GLO Europe General Director Stephen McQuoid-
'This is the story of Sir John Laing and his trusts, written to celebrate 100 years of Christian giving from 1922-2022. It is a model of history writing, well organised, clear and precise in its detail. But more than anything else, it is an inspiring story of a businessman who loved God, lived humbly and gave generously. Laing himself is no longer with us having passed away on the 11th January 1978, but the JW Laing Trust continues and is a key support to Christian organisations across the globe. As you read through to book you get a sense not only of the wide variety of ministries that the trust supports, but also an insight into the rationale which governed the way in which the giving was done. Among beneficiaries were mission and evangelism groups from within the Brethren movement, student ministries like UCCF, bible colleges, churches as well as a range of specific projects. Over the time period, the total giving came to a value in excess of £450 million which is a truly astonishing figure. It is both a fascinating read and a challenging one given that it demonstrates the power of consecrated giving.'
