Internationally respected scholar Richard Bauckham offers a brief, engaging study of divine revelation in Scripture. He probes the deep meaning of well-known moments in the biblical story in order to address the key question the Bible is designed to answer: Who is God?

Accessible for laypeople and important to scholars, this volume begins by exploring three key events in the Bible in which God is revealed: Jacob's dream at Bethel (the revelation of the divine presence), Moses at the burning bush (the revelation of the divine Name), and Moses on Mount Sinai (the revelation of the divine character). From there, Bauckham shows how the New Testament builds on these Old Testament passages by exploring three revelatory events in Mark's Gospel, events that reveal the Trinity: Jesus's baptism, transfiguration, and crucifixion.

As reviewed by Dr. Stephen McQuoid in May 2021- 'In this book Baukham takes a look at three key passages where God reveals himself. He firstly reveals his presence in Gen.28:10-22 at Jacob’s ladder. Then he reveals his name to Moses at the burning bush (Ex.3:1-6) before finally revealing something of his loving character in his meeting with Moses in Exodus 34. Baukham develops these ideas, not just with a lovely exposition of these passages but also by drawing on the rest of scripture to demonstrate the relationship that God desired with individuals, with Israel and with the world as a whole.

In typical fashion Baukham is full of insight as he draws out theological conclusions for these passages. He also draws attention to things we may never have noticed before, for example that the word ‘holy’ never appears in the book of Genesis, but does so frequently in Exodus because this is the start of his special relationship with Israel, a people who are made holy by God’s presence with them. This is an encouraging book that helps the reader to understand something of how God reveals himself to us and preachers could easily utilise this material for sermon series on the character of God and his relationship with man.'
