A memoir mapping the journey from atheism to faith, and how both connect with scientific discovery. In what he anticipates will be his final book, respected scientist and theologian Professor Alister McGrath shares the story of a life spent in pursuit of truth: first through the discipline of science, then in tandem with the Christian faith he found as a young man.

In Through a Glass Darkly Professor McGrath shares at length and for the first time how exactly he moved from atheism to faith while studying natural sciences at Oxford University, and how each discipline has informed the other throughout his life. This is a rich, inspiring read from one of today's greatest public theologians.

As reviewed by Dr. Stephen McQuoid in October 2020- 'I have long been a huge fan of McGrath and have greatly appreciated his writings, especially his magisterial Introduction to Christian Theology. This book is basically his autobiography and a fascinating read. It starts with his childhood in Northern Ireland which included an education in Methodist College (one of Belfast’s most prestigious high schools) where he became attracted to Marxism and atheism, and continues with his university years in Oxford when his Christian commitment began. His life was an unusual one, not least because of his startling academic success. But he movingly describes how his curious mind led him to delve into the natural sciences where he earned his DPhil, and then into theology where he has made an enormous contribution.

McGrath is a gentleman and it shows in the almost bashful way in which he tells his story. He manages to talk about his life and achievements in a humble way which itself is an achievement when someone is so naturally blessed with an enormous intellectual capacity. But McGrath is also both pastoral and committed to make Christian teaching available to the ordinary man in the street and his passion for helping fellow Christians grow in their faith also reveals itself in this book. It finishes with a series of reflective essays which are a mixed bag, some fairly vague, others very thoughtful and helpful. This book makes for an interesting and encouraging story, one that would actually make a very good Christmas present. It leaves the reader grateful that numbered within the Christian church are some genuinely brilliant thinkers.'
