Foreword by Lat Blaylock, RE Adviser with RE Today

A pupil in an RE lesson asks of the story of Christianity: 'Miss, how do we know if it's true?'

The teacher's reply really matters: should she say, 'It has been proved by scholars' or 'We don't know it's true' or 'It doesn't matter' or 'Maybe it is true for you'? It's not simple.

There is a saying of Jesus in John's Gospel: 'You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free' (John 8:32, NIV). For those who are interested in Christian education, it might be a key text. A school exists for the pursuit of truth in community: children and their teachers together try to find out what is true, and understand it. When it comes to RE, the teaching and impact of the Christian faith on the human race is undeniable, and it can be tempting to evade the truth question: 'Well, lots of people think it is important...'

In this book, author and teacher of RE Cavan Wood presents some creative and thoughtful signposts towards the answer to this question. Teachers will like the book for its practical and well- thought-out ideas about how children can engage with, reflect on and respond to the key ideas and stories of the Christian faith. RE lessons, done this way, will not panic teachers into over- hasty philosophical dismissal of pupils' deep questions. Nor will this book encourage simplistic promotion of Christianity in an unthinking way. Instead, Cavan Wood's approach will enable the teacher more confidently to encourage children to ask questions, and then to seek for answers themselves.

Perhaps the best answer to the question 'How do we know it is true?' is this one: 'Great question, Sharon. That's what we are here to find out. How do you suggest we start?' Then the RE lesson becomes the pursuit of truth, together, in community. Cavan Wood's carefully written, classroom friendly and fresh book will help teachers to develop the best kind of RE lessons.
