Stephen McQuoid's Recommendation

This is a book I looked forward to reading both because I heard John preaching on the subject years ago at the European Leadership Forum, but also because his book on Daniel, which is called Against the Flow, and written in the same style, is one of the best books I have read on a biblical character. I have to state that Friend of God did not disappoint. Written in John’s normal flowing and accessible style, John is able to make the character and context of Abraham come alive, and the reader not only gains a great deal of new knowledge, but the book is also full of passion, wisdom, pastoral care and helpful spiritual challenges. There are things found here that you will not get from any other book outside of serious academic tomes. There is also an excellent and brave Appendix which gives the history of Israel from the days of Abraham to the present. A brilliant read!

'Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. He was even called the friend of God.' (James 2.23)

Abraham is the only character in the Bible to be described as 'the friend of God'. This comprehensive study by John Lennox explores why.

Abraham is unquestionably one of the most outstanding and influential figures in world history. He had no political or military achievements, and he left no literary remains, yet today billions of people - more than half of the world's population - claim him as their spiritual father.

Throughout the Bible, Abraham is seen as a pivotal figure in God's plan of salvation. In this richly detailed account of his life and times, John Lennox helps us to see through mists of the past to the real flesh-and-blood man, with all his strengths and weaknesses, to better appreciate all that Abraham stands for as a model of faith today.
