When were you involved in GLO and in what role?

‘I joined GLO with my husband, Ray, in 1983 after completing 14 years as mission workers in Peru, to be involved with the Training for Service Programme (Tilsley College). It was a big challenge for us as a family having no idea what the future would hold. My work was overseeing practical matters related to the students’ accommodation and welfare. I also did some teaching, worked in the office, and through living on site was able to offer hospitality to many people visiting the centre. In 1997 we left Motherwell to continue our service with GLO in the development of a church in Murcia Spain until retirement in 2008.’

Why have you recommended 'Knowing God'?

‘We were sent ‘Knowing God’ by J I Packer while we were still living in Lima. It was very significant to me because I had never read a book like it before, and it gave me an overview of the Bible’s teaching on a very important subject.

‘J I Packer makes it clear that the aim of studying the Godhead must be to know God himself better rather than just increase our theological knowledge. The way to do it, he suggests, is to meditate on what is learnt so that it leads to communing with the Lord and allowing scripture to inspire prayer and praise to God.

‘I am currently re-reading Knowing God, trusting that it will deepen and refresh my appreciation of our wonderful God now, over forty years later, and that I will feel reassurance and joy in the amazing fact that I am known and loved by him.’
