This book was recommended by Judith McKeown as part of the ‘50 Years- 50 People- 50 Books!’ series. Here is Judith's full message and recommendation:

When were you involved in GLO and in what role?

‘I studied at Tilsley College from 2016 – 18 and afterwards joined the GLO Admin department, as the Mission Team administrator.’

Can you share a significant memory of that time?

‘Before I went to Tilsley I was greatly impacted by my time on summer teams. During that time I read many missionary biographies and I realized that other people also had had this sense of God prompting them to take a step of faith for Him.’

Why have you recommended '…'?

‘One such person was Helen Roseveare who was a missionary in the Congo. In her book, “Living Sacrifice: Willing to be whittled as an arrow” she says, “It would seem that God had merely asked me to give Him my mind, my training, the ability that He has given me; to serve Him unquestioningly; and to leave with Him the consequences… How wonderful God is, and how foolish we are to argue with Him and not to trust Him who wholly in every situation as we seek to serve Him!”

I can’t really sum it up much better than that and would encourage anyone to read this book, or other missionary biographies because seeing how God works in the lives of individuals is truly inspiring. ‘

With great thanks to Judith for her recommendation for the ‘50 Years- 50 People- 50 Books!’ series

Sacrifice is a term of the past, not of today. Today, no one is expected to sacrifice anything. We are surrounded by game shows that give you riches if you answer a few questions on general knowledge or guess the right box to open. The unspoken spirit of the age is ‘if something is difficult, do something else instead. If something is expensive, borrow it or borrow the money to buy it’. What place does ‘sacrifice’ have in this world? The Bible says it is central - and that sacrifice is not only a vital key to the future, it is the essence of a Christian’s life, today. The books in Dr. Helen Roseveare’s ‘Living’ series have become instant classics. If you pick up this book anywhere and start to read it, you won’t be able to put it down as she skilfully weaves stories of sacrifice together with Christian teaching on the subject. If those words sound alien to you then you may not have yet entered into the joy of Christian belief and service. The key to an authentic life is sacrifice. Helen Roseveare has led an incident-filled life as a medical missionary. A best-selling author, she is still active in writing and in demand for international conferences on mission and faith.
