This book was recommended by Marion Mathers as part of the '50 years- 50 people- 50 books!' series. Here is Marion's full message and recommendation:

When were you involved in GLO and in what role?

‘Hi, I am Marion Mathers and started as a volunteer in GLO bookshop in the Brown Street Hamilton, which was originally a fish and chip shop, but we thought it was a good idea to spread some healthy spiritual food instead.  I then was employed in the bookshop in Motherwell for a good number of years.’

Can you share a significant memory of that time?

‘This was a great experience and I enjoyed being able meet Christians from many other places as well as other countries. It was also a joy to look after the children’s section of the new shop and see lots of books and prizes going out to encourage children in their faith.’

Why have you recommended 'Pray Big'?

‘Our prayers have to be dependent, spiritual, focused, hopeful, for power, for love.

‘Our prayers are an admission that we are dependent on God for everything. If we are self-sufficient, we are more than likely to be self-righteous. But we have to acknowledge that everything comes from our Heavenly Father, and we must come knowing our heart before God and confessing or sins before him and on our knees (real or metaphorical) we ask for forgiveness.

‘So often our prayers are “earth bound and self-bound” but we need to see the bigger picture and recognise the greatness of God and the future that He has promised us and rejoice in a God who has provided a glorious future with Him in glory. Then we can ask for help to bring others to the same glorious future too.

‘We need to pray with focus with our eyes open to the real needs of others, and how we can help our churches or world and hear the Holy Spirit's direction. We often need the scales taken from our eyes to see both God and our world clearly.

‘We also need to remember we are coming to a Great Big God who is all powerful and who knows this world and who loves those who still reject Him.

‘We need His love and patience to serve others and point them to our Wonderful Saviour.’

With great thanks to Marion for her recommendation for the '50 years- 50 people- 50 books!' series

So many of us struggle with prayer. Many books have been written on the subject and there's a reason for that.

Prayer comes hard to most of us, in most seasons. And when we do pray, we often don't know what to say. What is it that my Father loves to hear about? What are the best things I could pray for my family, my church, and myself?

I want to pray bigger, and better. And I want you to enjoy praying like that too. And to do that, we need to discover how to pray as the apostle Paul did. Paul clearly enjoyed prayer, and was excited about it. He expected his Father in heaven to hear what he said, and to act in other people's lives accordingly. He prayed and then was 'watchful in it with thanksgiving' (Colossians 4 v 2), ready to see how God would be pleased to answer his prayers.
This book focuses on Paul's prayer for his friends in the church in Ephesus, that he recounts to them in Ephesians 1 v 15-23 and 3 v 14-21. The truths that underpin and shape his prayers for them will motivate us to pray and set us an example.

So be inspired by the Apostle Paul to pray bigger and pray better as we look to our heavenly Father to do more than all we ask or imagine!
