Rigid adherence to scientism-as opposed to a healthy respect for science-is all too prevalent in our world today. Rather than leading to a deeper understanding of our universe, this worldview actually undermines real science and marginalizes morality and religion....

In this book, celebrated philosopher J. P. Moreland exposes the selfdefeating nature of scientism and equips us to recognize scientism’s harmful presence in different aspects of culture, emboldening our witness to biblical Christianity and arming us with strategies for the integration of faith and science?the only feasible path to genuine knowledge.

Review from the GLO General Director, Stephen McQuoid:

Scientism and Secularism by the renowned Christian philosopher, J.P. Moreland. In this book, Moreland warns of the pernicious influence of scientism, which, he states, comes in two forms. The strong version of scientism claims that science alone gives knowledge, while the weak version of scientism claims that science is the best way to know things.

By contrast, Moreland is quick to point out the limitations of science and also to identify some of the things that science cannot explain. He notes that scientism has served to loosen the influence of the Christian faith on culture by pushing it into the margins and the realm of the subjective. However, he points out, not only the compatibility of science and faith, but also the importance of thinking both theologically and philosophically as we relate to the world around us.

Moreland also critiques methodological naturalism which suggests that any explanations for our universe must be from within nature, thus ruling out the possibility of the supernatural. He then defends the theist position showing that belief in God’s existence is both rational and reasonable. Along the way, in a slight detour, he also introduces the reader to arguments proposed by intelligent design. This is put forward as a credible alternative to the theory of evolution, and Moreland suggests it is a better option that its competitors.

If you have never read any serious book on philosophy before, this is a good place to start because the subject matter is very relevant and, while the book forces you to think, it is nevertheless accessible. Moreland writes in a direct and passionate style and he provides good and reasoned arguments for the Christian faith and theism. This book equips Christians to deal with the scientific challenges posed by people such as the so-called New Atheists, and it amply demonstrates why science is not a threat to Christian belief.
