Simon Fellow in Religion and Public Life at Princeton University. Trueman is a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

As reviewed by Stephen McQuoid, General Director of GLO, in March 2023: 'Some time ago I reviewed Carl Truman's previous work 'The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self', which was outstanding, but perhaps too academic for a wide readership and I expressed the hope that a more popular treatment would be forthcoming. Strange New World is that popular treatment.

Like the larger volume, 'Strange New World' takes the reader on a journey through time, outlining some of the key influencers who have shaped our thinking, in particular, when it comes to the issue of self. He begins with the Romantics like Descartes and Rousseau before progressing to Hegel, Marx and Nietzsche. Each made a contribution towards a point where the self has become viewed as a self-creation rather than a simple fact of reality. That is, we decide for ourselves who or what we are. From here he then focusses on the issue of sexuality. The shift in moral codes, the negation of family values, the advent of the pill combined with the notion of self-creation have all lead to a world in which same s-e-x relationships as well as transgender identities are not just to be allowed but are never to be criticised. Interestingly Truman is not totally negative about this situation because he believes that Christians can build strong community from the cultural margins and can withstand these cultural pressures. This is a brilliant little book and one of the best explanations for our current cultural context I have read in a long time.'
